The Beatles sound (or lack of) by Steve Hoffman...

“Right there, you're looking at them. No, not Paul in the background working on the White Album in 1968 but those two dreadful harsh sounding Altec limiters that they (for some unknown reason) LOVED at Abbey Road. Those buggers went between the microphones and the tape recorders on almost every Beatles recording, squashing, mashing, distorting, overloading and they loved it. I'd like to go back in time and unpatch them from the system. We could hear a Beatles record that had dynamic range for once. Better yet, I could go back in time and send those two Altec limiters back to America where no one used or liked them! I'd loan them a pair of Teletronix LA2a and Beatles records would be demo quality for once. That is all.” - Steve Hoffman
