Planar magnetics in UK
Audeze (pronounced Odyssey) headphones feature planar magnetic drive units, an advanced and highly beneficial departure from the traditional cone or dome systems used in the majority of loudspeakers and headphones. Planar magnetic drive units use ultra-thin uniformly driven diaphragms to produce outstanding levels of transparency, detail and power.
High-end distributor Decent Audio is delighted to add the state-of-the-art Audeze LCD-3 planar magnetic headphone to its portfolio.
Advanced materials
science, superior technology and superb craftsmanship combined with hundreds of
hours of critical listening, extensive technical measurement and user feedback
have gone into developing the Audeze LCD-3, unashamedly created to outperform
the already renowned LCD-2 and become the best headphone in the world.
Audeze headphones
are manufactured in the USA to ensure exceptional quality control throughout
the production process. Every Audeze
headphone is individually tested, burned-in and measured. The written results are
included with each headphone to ensure that every owner receives the same exceptional
quality.
Planar
magnetic technology
Drive units typically
consist of three main components: a diaphragm, a voice-coil and magnet arrays. In
planar magnetic drive units, the magnetic field is created by an array of
magnets distributed evenly across the entire surface of the diaphragm. The
magnetic field is arranged in the same plane as the diaphragm, hence the term
‘planar magnetic’.
Planar magnetic
diaphragms are extremely thin and lightweight compared to the much heavier cones
or domes used in conventional drive units.
Unlike a conventional
drive unit in which the diaphragm is attached to a voice coil (either at its
centre in the case of a cone, or at its edge in the case of a dome), a planar
magnetic diaphragm has a printed voice-coil spread across its entire surface.
When the voice coil is energised with an audio signal, it interacts with the
magnetic field and produces an electromagnetic force that moves the diaphragm,
thus creating sound.
Planar magnetic
drivers offer numerous benefits:
Responsiveness: The extremely lightweight diaphragm is able to
respond with more immediacy than in conventional drive units.
Low distortion: A planar magnetic drive unit is driven equally across
its entire surface, rather than just at the middle or the edge as in the case
of conventional cone or dome drive units. Consequently a planar magnetic drive
unit moves with far more accuracy and control leading to less distortion of the
sound.
Durability: The fact that the voice-coil is spread flat across
the entire diaphragm surface enables it to more quickly dissipate heat
generated by the amplified current passing through it. Additionally, the planar
magnetic drive unit is a simple and stable system with a single moving part:
the highly-tensioned diaphragm, which maintains its performance without sonic
degradation. Conventional drive units, in contrast, progressively degrade in
performance over their working life due to a multitude of moving parts and glue
joints.
Amplifier-friendly: The circuits found in planar magnetic diaphragms
present an almost purely resistive load to power amplifiers, making them an
easy load to drive.
Audeze employs a
number of proprietary techniques deigned to improve on basic planar magnetic
design. These include the integration of unique, ultra-thin diaphragms and
stronger, more optimised magnetic fields and circuit patterns.
Audeze’s goal is to
deliver the best in planar magnetic design and to continue to improve the
personal audio experience.
