Vapor Sound Nimbus speakers

Nimbus
MONO AND STEREO HIGH-END AUDIO MAGAZINE

The Nimbus is our most ambitious project yet. The goal was a high-sensitivity floor-stander with full range extension, class leading resolution and transparency, explosive dynamics, and wrapped in an elegant and unique shape. Those are lofty goals, and ones that have all been met with the Nimbus.

We began by choosing flawless drivers with which we’ve used in the past and achieved exceptional results. Anchoring the bottom is the Acoustic Elegance TD15 which provides a foundation of powerful and tuneful bass into the mid 20′s. The dual Accuton C158 midranges are incredibly fast and resolving, and deliver a palpable sense of dynamic jump. And to top it all off is the incomparable RAAL 70-20XR tweeter. All these drivers are integrated in the seamless manner Vapor Audio is known for.

Possibly the biggest challenge of the design was the cabinet construction. The larger a cabinet is, the more likely it is to resonate, and cabinet resonances are the enemy of transparency and accurate tonality. How we dealt with this problem is by creating wall panels out of many thin layers and formed into rigid, tensioned shapes. Then a matrix of internal bracing is added, and to top it off approx 30 pounds of our Inversion Layer material is added to the inside surfaces of all cabinet walls. To close out the cabinet design is an advanced multi-material front baffle that perfectly time aligns the drivers onto an extremely rigid launching platform.

With the Nimbus, form and function walk hand in hand. The complex curved walls contribute incredible strength and rigidity, eliminating panel resonances. They also create an image of style and modern grace that will be welcome in any home. Every curve and angle was created with careful thought into performance and appearance, the end result speaks for itself.

We believe the Nimbus is something of a game changer. It’s combination of build and component quality, performance, and contemporary styling are unmatched at anywhere near the price. In keeping with the tradition of Vapor Audio, no compromises were made during any stage of the design, and it’s obvious in the final product. The Nimbus disappears sonically into a room like small speakers can, but delivers foundation rattling dynamics and scale like only large speakers can. It’s an addictive combination, and we’re very excited to add the Nimbus to our lineup.

Black vs. White

Here at Vapor Audio we realize that there’s no such thing as “right” for everyone. When dealing with perception of a human sense, individual taste is all that matters. To give customers options, and ability to fit our designs to their taste, we offer most speakers in Black and White versions. Tonally they will be nearly identical, afterall they are both voiced by the same set of human ears. But the difference is what one might expect from a soft cone woofer versus a hard cone. Black versions offer softer cone paper drivers, while White versions offer harder ceramic cone drivers. The softer cone will smooth transients giving a warmer, more romantic presentation. The harder cone will give a very fast delivery of transients and a more lively presenation, with added detail retrieval.

It’s important to note the White is never forward or fatiguing, and the Black is never reticent or overly laid-back. Black and White offer different versions of essentially the same sound, options are a good thing. And with each the crossover optimized for the individual requirements of the unique driver compliment.
