One of my essential design and set-up references - Anne Bisson's Blue Mind on vinyl. She's not only got a lovely voice, her pace and rhythm is exemplary. This comes through easily from the vinyl, and also the high-rez files. This makes it very easy to evaluate turntable set-up, loudspeaker placement, etc.
One of my reference albums is Anne Bisson Blue Mind. When we did a Thorens 'fashion parade' with the Pacific Northwest Audio Society, this was one of the albums we used. We cued up four copies on four turntables so that we could quickly switch between them.
This worked particularly well because not only do I know Anne's speaking voice, I also know very well her singing voice. We've often had Anne come into the Genesis demo room and do a duet with herself.

When I need a piece of music to quickly identify differences between two pieces of gear, I have to rely on something that is instantly familiar. I need to know the "real" sound, as well as the recording. Some elements are absolutely essential - the human voice of someone I know and an instrument that I know pretty well.
