In their sixth ECM New Series release “Aquilonis“, the Scandinavian group Trio Mediæval offers a collection of polyphony from the medieval to the modern, titled after the North Wind.
Their voices embark listeners on a journey across time, from Iceland to Italy, described as John Potter – former Hilliard Ensemble tenor and longtime Trio Mediaeval mentor – as “a synthesis of sound and atmosphere… history and geography blending seamlessly.” Recorded at Propstei St. Gerold, “Aquilonis” features music ranging from Middle Ages Icelandic chants to 12th-century Italian sacred pieces, 15th-century English carols, timeless folk melodies and contemporary works from the Swede Anders Jormin, American William Brooks and Englishman Andrew Smith.
