German Physiks Unicorn Mk II.

German Physiks’ long running classic loudspeaker,  the Unicorn Mk II looks very unconventional because it is very unconventional.  It uses a single omnidirectional DDD driver to cover the entire audio range.  Above around 150Hz the DDD driver radiates directly.  Below this frequency, energy from the back of the DDD driver is coupled to a horn system.

During the design and very much to the designers’ surprise, they found that the Unicorn sounded better if certain cabinet panels were not made totally rigid.  This dictated the final shape of the cabinet, leading to the unconventional look.
