Gold Note – MC Vs MM Cartridges

Gold Note – Moving coil (MC) and moving magnet (MM) cartridges differ mainly in their construction and the sound characteristics they offer. MC cartridges have lighter and more mobile coils, which allows a lower effective tip mass and a wider frequency response, offering more detailed sound reproduction and better transient response. However, they produce a lower output signal, requiring a specific phono preamplifier or additional gain. Furthermore, MC cartridges are generally more expensive and delicate, with the stylus not being user-replaceable.

MM cartridges, on the other hand, have a simpler and more robust construction, with higher output levels that make them compatible with most standard phono inputs. The style is often user-replaceable, offering greater convenience. Although they may not reach the level of detail of MCs, MM cartridges are prized for their reliability and affordability.

To meet your different sound needs and preferences, we therefore offer a wide range of both MC and MM cartridges.
For example, the Donatello series includes MC models such as the Donatello Gold, which offers a detailed and dynamic sound with an extended frequency response and lightweight aluminium construction.

On the other hand, the Vasari series offers MM cartridges such as the Vasari Gold, designed to provide a warm and engaging sound, with solid construction and excellent performance in its class.

The perception that MC cartridges offer superior sound quality is well-founded, especially in terms of detail and transient response. However, the choice between a MC and a MM cartridge depends on the specific needs of the listener, the audio system in use and the available budget. High-end MM cartridges can offer excellent performance, while MCs require both an investment and more care in set-up.
