Two dramatically uncompromising Cello Concertos by Prokofiev & Shostakovich are Hyperion Record of the Month for March 2015, and they find superstar Steven Isserlis revelling in their thrilling transformation of the instrument from a role of Romantic lyricism to one of barely concealed violence. Paavo Järvi makes his Hyperion debut, here conducting the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Equally uncompromising is a new recording of Music for string quartet by Szymański & Mykietyn, composers firmly in the vanguard of new Polish music. Their compatriots in the Royal String Quartet draw an arresting beauty from these most individual of works.
