Inlow Sound is now offering the commercial production runs with additional refinement for their Spiral bass SUPER horn. “The channel iron has been replaced with steel strips embedded in strips of wood. The idea is to decrease weight while remaining extremely rigid. For those with deeper pockets, I use 1” (25 mm) Baltic birch plywood. This has to be the best plywood I’ve ever had the pleasure to use in my creations. It has at least 20 plies, perhaps more, and is without equal in all respects. The narrow spiral walls in this particular horn are fabricated from strips of clear vertical grain Douglas fir.
Project start: Autumn of 2013. I, like every horn loving affectionado, dream of a bass horn that will cover the entire bass section. Unfortunately, a horn that reaches down to 20hz is going to be rather large. Yes, the wife will generally drop an anchor on that idea faster than you can cough, sputter, or offer reason and logic to support your justification for the beastly gadget in her living room.”
I believe I’ve discovered a way to get your cake, and eat it too, provided you have a bit of EQ, a large living room with high ceilings, and floor space on the order of 600 square feet. Ahem, now that I’ve eliminated two thirds of my audience…. (think of the marriages saved).
