Linn today announces the launch of its first-ever in-house designed loudspeaker drive units, now available in its flagship 360 loudspeaker. Developed from first principles over three years, these new 6″ upper bass and 8″ woofer units are built around Linn’s unique Pistonik motor system and deliver ultimate linearity across a prodigious excursion range, with dramatically lower distortion and greater accuracy than anything available elsewhere.
When Linn designed its flagship 360 loudspeaker, the goal was to drive distortion down to unprecedented levels. Breakthrough technologies like Adaptive Bias Control and Power DAC, paired with a revolutionary cabinet design and Exakt phase-linear digital crossover, already delivered its signature wide dispersion and low distortion. Yet the system remained fundamentally constrained by off-the-shelf lower-frequency drive units-the most significant remaining source of distortion and noise.
Linn has since devoted three years to designing its own drive units from the ground up.

At the core of these new drivers is Pistonik, Linn’s unique motor system. Pistonik produces flawless force over its entire range of in-and-out travel-even when driven extremely hard with bass-heavy music-thanks to a very long-stroke motor topology with a specially extended magnet gap.
Major innovations throughout Pistonik’s design engineer out all magnetic, mechanical, and thermal factors which together conspire to defeat linearity. When integrated into Linn 360 loudspeaker systems, awesome volumes of air are moved, with absolute control, and the widest truly linear excursion of any low-frequency drive units, ever.
To stabilise the magnetic field inside the voice coil gap, and reduce the impact of eddy currents, Linn has immersed the whole Pistonik motor assembly in permanent magnetic saturation. This enhanced stability reduces distortion drastically, and provides the drive unit with exceptional agility and responsiveness by lowering magnetic drag and demand on amplifiers.
Pistonik’s triple-layered ventilation network eliminates acoustic compression as a source of distortion and noise, allowing air to move freely and silently through the motor structure. The driver’s moving mass maintains smooth, supple motion, with the absolute absence of audible air turbulence.
Untroubled by rising resistance due to thermal build-up, performance remains steadfast after hours of continuous listening. The voice coil is kept cool by carefully designed ventilation paths, with heat drawn directly into surrounding steel and aluminium structures so that warm air is continuously exchanged for cool within the speaker cabinet.
To realise its full potential, this groundbreaking motor system is paired with an equally advanced suspension. Because Linn designs complete systems —and understands precisely how its integrated loudspeakers are driven and the forces at play—the company was able to create a far more extreme suspension system than the norm, pushing performance right to the edge, safely.
Advanced multi-physics simulation informed the design of a finely tuned, bespoke suspension that stiffens rapidly and predictably at the last possible moment, remaining under complete control with impeccable linearity right up to maximum excursion.

For both the 6″ and 8″ drive units, Linn designed a hard aluminium diaphragm. Strong, rigid, and light, it allows break-up behaviour to be pushed well beyond the operating frequency range while keeping moving mass low to improve efficiency. Carefully optimised coupling of the diaphragm to both the surround and Pistonik motor system pushes resonance frequencies higher still and reduces their magnitude.
Each individual drive unit is further refined using Linn’s proprietary Exakt technology. Laser measurement at the factory determines the unique characteristics of every unit, with this data used to generate a tailor-made Exakt profile. Once installed, the system retrieves this information and applies a precise correction filter-accurate to within 0.0625dB of the reference-ensuring each drive unit performs exactly as designed. In all practicality, customers have the reference speaker in their home.
With complete understanding of how these drive units are driven within Linn systems, their performance has been pushed to the very edge of what is possible. At the core, Pistonik delivers flawless linear force across its prodigious excursion range, immune to magnetic, mechanical, and thermal factors. Every surrounding element works together in service of ultimate linearity.
These 6″ upper bass and 8″ woofer units redefine the state of the art—delivering deeper, cleaner, and more controlled bass, with total accuracy and the widest truly linear excursion of any low-frequency drive units ever.
Availability and Pricing
From today, the new drive units are standard in all newly built 360 loudspeakers and are also available as a monumental upgrade for existing owners. The upgrade takes maximum 2 hours and can be performed in the customer’s home.
To mark the launch, Linn has also introduced a new real wood walnut veneer finish for 360. This finish joins the Classic Collection, its natural grain introducing warmth, depth, and subtle variation, set against a choice of anodised black or silver machined aluminium trim.
