Merrill Audio ELEMENT 110 Power Amplifiers Monoblocks Review

I reviewed the Merrill Audio VERITAS and THOR monoblocks way back in 2016, and now, almost a decade later, Merrill Wettasinghe’s proud creations—the ELEMENT 110 monoblock power amplifiers—return to Mono & Stereo to take center stage.

The ELEMENT 110

The Merrill Audio ELEMENT 110 monoblock amplifiers deliver substantial power, made possible by the use of advanced Gallium Nitride (GaN) transistors. These amplifiers not only meet their rated output but comfortably exceed expectations, especially when paired with power-hungry loudspeakers that thrive on 300 watts or more.

With the ELEMENT 110, music occurs from a black background, enriched by a natural sense of flow, tonal sweetness, and finely resolved detail. Dynamics are delivered with control and authority, yet never at the expense of musical finesse. It’s this balance of energy and refinement that sets the ELEMENT 110 apart.

Element 118 Power Amplifier Monoblocks

By leveraging the speed and efficiency of GaN technology, Merrill Audio has successfully brought down the cost of entry into the ELEMENT series without compromising its signature sonic character.

The ELEMENT 110 remains faithful to its lineage, preserving the smooth, highly resolving musical presentation that defines the series.

Designed from the ground up to drive even the most demanding loudspeakers, the ELEMENT 110 maintains composure under challenging impedance loads. Its architecture supports stable operation down to 1 ohm, with protection circuitry engaging only beyond that point. Power is delivered with precision and consistency, increasing proportionally as impedance decreases. With each halving of load, output power doubles—ensuring unwavering control and authority across a wide range of speaker requirements.

The ELEMENT 110 combines refined functionality and design, featuring a 7-inch glass capacitive touch screen for mute, brightness, and power meter control, housed in an elegant rose gold and black chassis with vibration control, IsoAcoustics GAIA III isolation footers, average power output meter, temperature gauges, a 20-amp IEC inlet for improved AC connection, custom Merrill Audio XLR inputs, and WBT speaker terminals with copper plating and rhodium finish.

The Music

As always, here are a few reference albums and tracks that highlight the strengths of the Merrill Audio ELEMENT 110 Monoblock Power Amplifiers.

When a system—particularly the electronics—meets the musical and dynamic demands of a recording, it naturally invites the listener to turn up the volume, especially with dynamically rich material.

ELEMENT 110s excels exactly in these realms, maintaining balance and engagement even as the listening level increases, willingly or subconsciously.

Pierre Boulez – Boulez conducts Stravinsky Le Sacre du Printemps

Pierre Boulez’s reading of Le Sacre du Printemps almost poignantly reveals itself with pacing and emotional impact that cannot leave the listener untouched.

The Merrill Audio ELEMENT 110 amplifiers deliver an instantly impressive rendition—one that doesn’t rely on sheer force or exaggerated dynamism, but unfolds with refined, evenly distributed power, drawing the listener inward, not outward, unveiling a rare phenomenon of underlying intensity, unveiling Stravinsky’s complex compostion, elevating rhythm and pace beyond sculptural energy into a deliberate, raw musical momentum.

While this particular interpretation might be seen as slightly reserved or restrained, especially when compared to more thunderous renditions, Boulez never sacrifices definition, nor do the ELEMENT 110 monoblocks. They avoid that bell-like zing often associated with exaggerated upper harmonics, a coloration even some pricier amplifiers fail to prevent. With Merrill Audio amplifiers, no artificial edge or brightness yields—just poise, stability, and control.

The ELEMENT 110 allows the orchestral momentum to expand naturally, with genuinely deep lows and a high end that retains an unforced, refined airiness. Timbre, tone, and color remain intact, free from the familiar midrange push often associated with amplifiers voiced for a “musical” character—an approach that too frequently compromises balance and transparency. Quite oppositely, Merrill Audio’s design honors the integrity of the source material, giving each orchestral layer its proper weight and allowing the arrangement to breathe, both musically and emotionally.

But the ELEMENT 110 goes even further, unveiling the tangibility of musical vignettes—scenes that emerge and recede with lyrical sensitivity, all without losing the underlying tension that propels the orchestra forward. These monoblocks resist typical audiophile theatrics, opting instead for structural dynamic control and vividness, opening a rare, cinematic perspective on the composition.

It’s not easy to reflect Boulez’s phrasing—marked by internal discipline—yet the ELEMENT 110s builds the necessary drama not through loudness, but through the contrast between content and silence, sidestepping overt manipulation of tempo or dynamic swells; each phrase feels purposeful, and transitions carry weight and intention.

It was a refreshing experience to observe the ELEMENT 110 amplifiers exhibit such a high level of control under demanding orchestral loads. Their lightning-fast responsiveness allows them to adapt to the slightest musical changes with ease.

When amplifiers fail to match an orchestra’s energy and precision, musicians tend to react more aggressively to sonic imbalances, losing their musical compass and coherence. The ELEMENT 110, by contrast, maintains a real-time, unwavering direction, effortlessly tracking Boulez’s guided orchestra impetus.

It’s one of those rare qualities that separates technically proficient, musically insightful amplification from mediocrity.

It is never easy to reproduce classical music with the required authority, especially at the ELEMENT 110’s price point. Yet these amplifiers belong to a rare class of electronics that offer a valid benchmark for listeners who seek genuine depth over artificial drama, and for those who prefer lasting insight over momentary effect.

Madonna – Ray of Light

Ray of Light, produced by Madonna and William Orbit, is hard to overlook on many levels. It marked a distinct shift toward mysticism, reflecting Madonna’s lifestyle changes at the time, including her interest in Kabbalah and yoga.

Many will instantly recall the haunting music video for “Frozen,” directed by Chris Cunningham. Its eerie, visual tone resonated perfectly with the track’s electronic production.

Despite being released back in 1998, its sonic impact remains a benchmark in modern pop music.

Ray of Light is a splendidly produced album and presents a significant challenge for high-end audio systems, especially amplifiers, to reproduce faithfully. If a power amplifier cannot evenly distribute power across the frequency spectrum, Madonna’s vocals on “Frozen” can easily become garbled and lost within the electronic backdrop. Unlike the ducking effect that even some far more expensive amplifiers struggle to handle cleanly, the ELEMENT 110 amplifier not only preserved the vocals’ three-dimensional presence but also effortlessly unraveled the groove’s complexity, without compromising timing.

These two attributes alone are worth highlighting, as not many amplifiers deliver such unity and continuity without blurring the music’s narrative.

Additionally, with Merrill Audio amplifiers, there’s something almost tectonic happening beneath the surface—a distinct lucidity that typically starts at the high plane of product portfolio. This clarity and control exalt the listening experience, offering both refinement and dynamic authority that are rare in this class of products.

Tool – Fear Inoculum

With mileage, many things inevitably change. These days, I find myself increasingly fastidious about one particular element—speed. Not in the overt or mechanical sense, but rather as a refined principle, akin to optimized software code developed through decades of iteration and insight.

Fear Inoculum, Tool’s most introspective and mature work to date, fits this mindset perfectly. Its carefully metered pacing and complex rhythmic structures demand an amplifier that constantly keeps up with the music flow.

An amplifier should never act as a coping mechanism, compensating for limitations or masking deficiencies. It should serve as a lightning-fast intermediary—a transparent conduit between the recording and the listener. That’s precisely what the Merrill Audio monoblocks are: unapologetic in their revelation of sonic truth, stripped of banality or embellishment. They offer an unvarnished transmission of musical intent, free from coloration yet rich. And Fear Inoculum is, by all means, at full force.

Across the album, the ELEMENT 110 demonstrates an uncommon aptitude for speed, not merely as a showcase of brute force, but as a dynamic vector of control and refinement. Its ability to resolve micro-differentiations while preserving harmonic integrity gives the music a vital presence, never cloaked in frequency tuning or tamed to play it safe. Here, speed isn’t about quickness; it’s about timing. And the ELEMENT 110 delivers in spades.

Too often, with amplifiers of all kinds—regardless of topology or class—music is pushed to the perimeter, never quite reaching the listener’s emotional center. The Merrill Audio monoblocks defy this pattern. They operate at the very core of the music’s architecture, where it subsists, evolves, and communicates directly. The ELEMENT 110s anchors that truth with a kind of kinetic plasticity, allowing the performance to unfold in real time, unbound and unblurred. These monoblocks go beyond mere playback; they habilitate impact where it matters most and deliver it continually, with authority.

Tool’s Pneuma serves as a definitive litmus test. It’s a track built around cyclical tension, driven by precise polyrhythms and layered instrumental interplay.

Every shift in energy demands absolute cohesion from the system setup. Through the ELEMENT 110 amps, the intro’s delicate interplay between guitar and drums remains tense, withholding nothing. As the track unfolds into denser passages, the monoblocks maintain complete spatial and temporal grip—never lagging, never overshooting. What emerges transcends the domain of sonic accuracy, offering a refreshing sense of harmonicity and structural continuity that many amplifiers fail to uphold under pressure.

The Conclusion

There are many power amplifiers in the ever-growing competitive high-end audio market, and the Merrill Audio ELEMENT 110 monoblocks represent an interesting, music-first proposition that differs from existing options. With more than enough attributes to allure music lovers and audio aficionados, they stand apart.

Regarding the technology beneath the chassis, many modern power amplifiers struggle on multiple fronts, often with exaggerated low-end and unbalanced energy distribution that can considerably mask the upper midrange. Consequently, closely connected with psychoacoustics, they blur the highs.

The ELEMENT 110s act as the antidote to this. They render music with unique harmonicity in a properly set-up system, remaining precise and contoured when program material demands it, without hindering articulation.

Any musical piece presents complex challenges, and amplification circuits must render these demanding tasks. The ELEMENT 110 amps ably avoid harmonic disruption, maintaining clear instrumental notes with viable decays and delays even at louder volumes, without introducing phantom even/odd harmonic phenomena.

Regardless of specifications and measurements, some power amplifiers induce resonant frequencies that affect tonal definition and blur musical scope.

Music reproduction must adhere to physical sonic principles to achieve essential integrity. In an era of overly flavored or vague electronics, rediscovering Merrill’s aural direction – this musical approach that entices listeners– proves refreshing.

These monoblocks allow music to emerge from deep blacks and fade to black depths instantly when needed. This is how high-end audiophile-grade amplification should perform, and the ELEMENT 110 operates naturally without dynamic limitations – a singular virtue worthy of praise.

They cut through musical fabric with clarity and panache, delivering essential high-end sparkle while balancing thorough juxtaposition of feather-like and thunderous dynamism. This ensures consistent attack speed and sonic density regardless of volume level.

Merrill Audio enables a deeper emotional connection. Designed from the ground up to navigate varied musical choices, they exhibit distinctive timing accuracy and higher plane spatiality, allowing instruments and performers to appear naturally within the sonic sphere.

A fundamental splendor emerges when music is reproduced properly, revealing the essential magic when everything sounds just right. This is expressed through several indicators, including stereo field realism, rich harmonic content, texture, dynamic contrast, and physical depth, contributing to a complete, upper-echelon level of resolution.

With limited review time annually, curiosity and enthusiasm must guide discovery, and I’m more than happy that I’ve taken a deep dive into Merrill Audio’s latest offering. Merrill Wettasinghe purveys something deeper and extraordinary, evident in every musical turn. The ELEMENT 110 monoblocks counteract amplifiers that induce listener disenchantment. These US-made amplifiers deliver profound musical gravitas rather than entry-level catharsis.

At current pricing, Merrill Audio establishes an intriguing market threshold without typical competitive posturing. The ELEMENT 110’s potent core challenges myths about sub-$15k electronics.

For their stand-out performance and overall value, I am proud to grant the Merrill Audio ELEMENT 110 monoblock amplifiers the Mono & Stereo’s 2025 Highly Recommended Award.
