ARCHIVAL TAPE EDITION #14
OSCAR PETERSON TRIO / NIGHT TRAIN

“Night Train,” an album by the Oscar Peterson Trio, was released in 1963 by Verve Records. The album, dedicated to Peterson’s father, a sleeping-car attendant for Canadian Pacific Railways, showcases jazz, blues, and R&B standards. Among its tracks, it includes “Hymn to Freedom,” an original composition spontaneously written in the studio to conclude the album. This piece serves as a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.

ARCHIVAL TAPE EDITION #15
LOUIS ARMSTRONG MEETS OSCAR PETERSON

Norman Granz signed Armstrong to his Verve roster and placed him with the label’s hero, Oscar Peterson’s trio, augmented by Bellson, for this relaxed, unhurried session recorded on October 14, 1957, and first issued on LP in 1959. After a super busy year, the 56-year-old Satchmo relished this chance to sit down with Peterson, his trumpet mostly untouched, taking it relatively easy, with his peerless, husky vocals taking center stage. Just to hear Armstrong handle “Blues In The Night”, complete with its beautifully balanced trumpet solo, is enough to justify Granz’s original idea.

ARCHIVAL TAPE EDITION #16
SARAH VAUGHAN / SARAH VAUGHAN

“Sarah Vaughan” is a legendary jazz album from 1955, featuring singer Sarah Vaughan and trumpeter Clifford Brown. Released under the EmArcy label, it represents the sole collaboration between these two musicians. Vaughan herself favoured this album above all her other works until 1980, and it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
Following our legendary Mastercut Edition #7: Ella and Louis, this is the second MONO release in the brief history of our Mastercut Archival Tape Edition series. It serves as further proof of the incredible richness a Mono recording can exhibit.
