The TechDAS Air Force 20 is built on four key engineering concepts, each contributing to the turntable’s overall stability and precision. Its Air Float and Vacuum Hold-Down system allows the heavyweight platter to rotate on a ten-micron film of air, eliminating mechanical contact with the bearing altogether. At the same time, vacuum suction pulls the record tightly against the platter, flattening imperfections and forming a rigid, unified platform for playback.
Its drive system is derived from the flagship Air Force Zero and centers on an air-bearing flywheel that increases the total rotational inertia of the assembly by a factor of five. Power is transferred without direct mechanical contact, minimizing friction, eliminating cogging, and maintaining exceptionally consistent rotational speed.
The platter itself uses a dual-layer construction. A non-magnetic SUS316L stainless steel main platter is paired with either an A7075 Extra Super Duralumin or TP340 pure titanium upper platter. The two are permanently vacuum bonded into a single, highly rigid structure, with the different materials providing distinct mechanical characteristics while preserving structural integrity.
Supporting the entire assembly is the Monotube Oil-Damped Spring Suspension, a refined evolution of the design introduced with the Air Force Two. A precision spring operates within a sealed, oil-damped chamber, while a free-floating piston regulates movement and dissipates unwanted energy. This arrangement effectively isolates the platter from external vibration, allowing it to settle with composure and maintain a stable, controlled platform for the stylus.
