Thomas starts the 2017 with a very special tube of the month. This time its a turn for a full wave mercury vapour rectifier: The 83.
I’m more then sure, that I’m not the only sucker for that unmistekaebly blue glow of ionised mercury, that appears when high voltage is applied to the plates. Mercury completely evaporates and re-condenses only at the base with a unique flickering non constant glow.
Contrary to other Mercury vapour rectifier tubes, 83 can be mounted vertically as well as horizontally and it doesn’t need a pre heating of the filaments to vaporise the mercury before high voltage gets applied.
As 83 is directly heated and as the filament is identical to the cathode it only needs four pins.
