The highest-performance loudspeaker drivers rely on extremely high-strength permanent magnets—typically rare-earth-based neodymium—to achieve their incredible speed and precision. YG Acoustics recently collaborated with Niron Magnetics and Scan-Speak to challenge this standard, developing advanced speaker drivers that utilize Niron’s high-strength, rare-earth-free iron nitride magnets instead.
Made from iron and nitrogen rather than rare-earth metals—which are complex to extract and increasingly in short supply—this technology offers a highly sustainable path forward for audio without compromising performance.
“Last week at the HIGH END show in Vienna, we debuted this exciting new technology in a special pair of rare-earth-free Carmel 3 loudspeakers. They sounded great, and it was a wonderful opportunity to showcase this innovation: not only to the audio industry and our customers, but also to the wider non-audio press. This was just a technology demonstration but the project gave a fascinating glimpse into the future. We are thrilled about the possibilities Niron’s magnets offer as we explore long-term avenues to engineer even higher sound quality and efficiency in the years to come. No matter how advanced the materials or the science, every innovation we pursue is dedicated to a single, unwavering goal: allowing you to sit back, press play, and lose yourself completely in the joy of the music.”
