CAMILLA WICKS – SIBELIUS

Extremely rare Camilla Wicks original Sibelius concerto LP.  She first performed the Sibelius Concerto when she was fifteen, at the Leventritt Competition, where she won second prize. She played it many times in Scandinavia, in Finland. On one occasion, Sibelius heard a performance on the radio and invited her to meet him at his villa. When she asked him to comment on her interpretation, he said, “Just play it the same way.”  First recorded in Sweden on Metronome CLP 510 White with Blue Circle Mono Label, Matrix P.8175, Stampers Z1/Z2, recorded 18 February 1952.

Camilla Wicks, violin, accompanied by the Stockholm Philharmonic under Sixten Ehrling. There were several excellent female exponents of the Sibelius Concerto, (the composer also praised Guila Bustabo, Anja Ignatius, and Ginette Neveu), but Wicks’ version remains the most cherished for record collectors. – Saulo Zucchello
