The Garrard 301 was designed as a working transcription turntable and expected to run properly for long periods without drift or adjustment. Stability and mechanical behaviour mattered.
Sable Garrard’s Belgrave plinth is built in small numbers in the UK for long-term use rather than display alone. Mass, stiffness and proportion all play their part, but a Garrard also has to feel visually right both in motion and at rest.
The textured Sable finish of the 301 changes under different light. In lower light it almost disappears. Under direct light the texture becomes more apparent.
Most surviving 301s are already well into their third life by now. First as broadcast equipment, later in enthusiast systems and listening rooms, and now restored for another generation of listening.
Still working. Still in service.
