“Recording the fantastic TEN DRUM percussion group, at the Chimei Hall, in the Chimei Art Museum in Tainan, Taiwan. The last time I recorded this outstanding group, for Wind Records, over ten years ago, that recording was nominated for a Grammy. I have deviated from the Straight and Narrow Path and moved away from the Gospel of Saint Blumlein! Earthworks mics and preamp…
The spaced Omni technique that I employ, is something that I was turned in to by my old friend Ole Brosted Sorensen, once the head of R&D at B&K/DPA. According to their experiments, a 12 inch spacing produced the best results… So, a little experimentation lead me to the experts, thus I had the custom jig made, which also lends itself for recording with the NOS Dutch Radio method of two cardioids spaced a tad over 12 inches and angled at 90 degrees. I, however employ “fat” cardioids. The Earthworks Omni mics and pre were the right pick for the lightning fast transients and the very wide dynamic range.
